Summer can officially begin once we are at the cottage enjoying Grandma’s bourbon slush. I am not sure where this recipe originated and I have been enjoying it for over 30 years.
We enjoy a slush when we are relaxing at the cottage, swimming at our pool or enjoying a game of cards. Nothing beats a slush on a hot summer day! Although we have always made our slush with bourbon, any whisky would do.
You will need a large freezer safe container for this recipe. We always make our slush a few days before we plan to serve it.
How to Make Grandma's Summertime Slush
Ingredients
Directions
You will need a large bowl to mix all ingredients. If your freezer container is heat resistant then you can make this recipe right in the freezer container and save on the clean-up!
Make 2 cups of strong tea in a pyrex measuring cup. Add a minimum of 5 tea bags to 2 cups of water or adjust to your taste. Steep for 5 minutes.
Add the cans of lemonade and orange juice to the freezer container/bowl.
Remove tea bags and add 2 cups of strong tea to the freezer container bowl. Stir until orange juice concentrate and lemonade are dissolved. You may need to measure more hot water and add. Be sure to keep track of how much water you add (7 cups total).
Add sugar and any remaining water (of the 7 cups total) and bourbon to the freezer container/bowl and stir until all sugar dissolves.
Place the bowl/container in the freezer. The ingredients will not freeze solid due to the alcohol and it may take a few days to turn into a slush.
Serving Suggestion
When you are ready to serve the slush, simply fill a serving glass 2/3 full of slush and add your favourite pop or soda water. We like to add grapefruit pop, Sprite or Mountain Dew. President’s Choice at Zehrs carries a nice grapefruit soda that is a nice accompaniment to the bourbon slush.
Garnish with a slice of lemon or lime and enjoy. Some like to sip it with a spoon and others sip it straight. Bet you can’t have just one!
