During my last trip to the grocery store, I came upon a display of deep pink, large dragon fruit. They were so enticing. Of course, I asked myself, what cocktail can I make with that?
This week the world learned that musician, businessman, and philanthropist Jimmy Buffet passed away. He owned the popular restaurant chain Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville. Naturally, in his honor, the Dragon Fruit Margarita was born.
Classic margaritas include tequila, orange liqueur (Triple Sec, Cointreau, or Grand Marnier), lime juice and some include a sweetener such as simple syrup. They can be shaken, served over ice, or blended to make a frozen drink. The addition of fruit to the margarita is a popular way to prepare.
Dragon Fruit Margarita Ingredients
Dragon Fruit – a large fruit that grows on the Hylocereus cactus. It is native to southern Mexico and Central America, although grown worldwide now. It is said to be a cross between a kiwi and a pear. The inside can be either white or pink. Dragon Fruit is considered nutrient-dense as it is low in calories and high in fiber, antioxidants, and nutritional content. That makes this tequila cocktail healthy, right?
Tequila – a standard Blanco tequila works well in this cocktail.
Orange Liquor – Triple Sec is the most popular, but Cointreau and Grand Marnier also work well.
Lime juice – lime is a flavor that shines in the margarita. It is best to use freshly squeezed, but a good quality lime juice can be substituted for ease.
Sweetener – simple syrup or liquid honey can be used if you prefer a sweeter cocktail.
Blender – a quality blender will quickly blend the cocktail. I have a Vitamix that I’ve named Vivian, she does a great job!
